1. Karel, what attracts you most to portrait, glamour, and nude photography? Is it artistic passion or more about provoking?

Karel Skumanc: Definitely provocation! I love having the opportunity to depict feminine beauty in a way that sparks someone else’s imagination. Nowadays, nudity and eroticism are everywhere, and people rarely use their imagination; everything is immediately visible. That’s why I believe it’s essential to tease and challenge people’s imaginations.

2. How do you select your models for shoots? Admit it—is personal sympathy or physical attraction involved?

Karel: For me, personal sympathy is crucial. The lady I’m photographing must have something extra—it’s that indescribable spark. Sometimes, just beautiful eyes are enough to captivate my attention.

3. Do you think your photography reflects your personal fantasies and desires, or do you strictly maintain professionalism?

Karel: It’s probably fifty-fifty. Everyone has fantasies and desires, but it’s not always possible to capture them with just anyone.

4. How would you react if a model told you after a photoshoot that she regretted participating? Would you take it personally?

Karel: It wouldn’t affect me personally. She saw my previous work and decided to participate on her own accord.

5. What’s your take on feminism and criticism regarding the portrayal of women’s bodies in art and photography? Do you think you could ever find yourself in conflict over this?

Karel: Each woman has the right to decide how she is portrayed. If she has no problem with it, then no one else should criticize her choice. It’s her decision, and no one else’s.

6. Is there a taboo you would never portray in your work, and why?

Karel: When it comes to beauty, desire, or tasteful provocation, I can portray almost anything. However, I draw the line at anything that degrades or dehumanizes, such as explicit violence or humiliation.

7. What do you think about the commercial use of photography—is it more art or just business?

Karel: Commercial use is always business, and to be honest, that’s a bit problematic for me. The moment you start selling the female body as a commodity, it stops being art.

8. What advice would you give to aspiring photographers who want to pursue a similar style of photography but are afraid of how their surroundings will react? Have you ever had a negative experience because of it?

Karel: Negative reactions to shooting more revealing portraits? Yeah, I deal with them all the time. I live in a small town, so if you know, you know—gossip and whispers everywhere. The key is not to let it get to you. Everyone should shoot what they love because the right audience will always find you. As for the rest? They can think whatever they want, but that’s about all they can do.
