Today, we dive into the artistic journey of Nikol.jan_art, a gifted Czech artist whose passion for creativity began in childhood and continues to evolve through dedication and experimentation.

In this interview, Nikol shares what sparked her love for drawing, her favorite creative rituals, and how she overcomes artistic blocks. You’ll get a glimpse into her process, from chaotic beginnings to meticulous detailing, and even her advice for those eager to pick up a pencil and start their artistic journey.

1. What inspired you to start drawing, and how did you discover your unique style?

I’ve been drawing since childhood—I don’t even remember when I started. Later, I decided to attend an art school where I could develop my talent, and it became my hobby. Now, I’m in my final year at an art high school, specializing in industrial design and conceptual development.

2. Do you have a ritual or a favorite place where you create best?

I usually work at home or at school, but I prefer going to the forest, sitting down, and drawing outdoors. It helps me clear my mind and relax.

3. What does your creative process look like from start to finish?

It always starts with chaos. I think nobody but me can make sense of it. But as I sketch the basic outlines, the picture becomes more defined and starts resembling what it’s supposed to. I move from the foundations to the details. I usually work until I’m satisfied, though often, when I look at it the next day, I find little tweaks I want to make. And sometimes, I get frustrated and throw the artwork away or completely repaint the canvas.

4. What do you do when you’re looking for inspiration, but ideas aren’t coming?

Sometimes, nothing comes to mind. In those moments, I just sketch random things and try to find something interesting to develop further. Another option is browsing Pinterest until something inspires me, though it often distracts me from the theme I had in mind. Social media like Instagram is similar—they’re more distracting than helpful for inspiration. So for me, the best approach is to keep trying or set it aside and return later. The idea always comes eventually.

5. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start drawing but doesn’t know how?

You should draw regularly—it’s not always about talent. You just need the desire and effort. The more you draw or paint, the better you’ll get. Everyone has their own unique style, and not all art is about perfection. A good idea and motivation are more than half the battle.

6. What does your ideal day off look like?

It might sound funny, but on my ideal day off, I wouldn’t even want to see a pencil or paper. Since I focus on art all week, I rarely feel like drawing on weekends. That’s also why many of my works are unfinished. I usually do other things, like spending time in nature, taking amateur film photos, traveling, or hanging out with friends. And some days, I just relax at home with a good series or book.
